Lessons on the Road to Emmaus!
The resurrection happened. The tomb was empty, but not everyone knew it yet or believed it. Two disciples are walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, confused, heartbroken, and full of questions and then Jesus shows up, but they don’t recognize Him.
Lesson 1: Jesus walks with us even when we don’t realize it. Luke 24:15 says, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. Sometimes we think God is distant just because we don’t feel Him. The truth is – He walks with us, even in our confusion and disappointment. Application: You may be on your own Emmaus Road, wondering where God is. He’s closer than you think.
Lesson 2: Jesus listens before he speaks. V 17 Jesus asks, what are you discussing together as you walk along? He lets them pour their hearts out. They talk about their unreachable hopes, promises seemingly broken. Jesus doesn’t interrupt; He listens. Application: Jesus wants to hear your story -even when its messy. He meets you with your questions, not just your praises.
Lesson 3: Jesus reveals himself through the Word and the table. Later, He opens the scriptures to them- and their hearts burn within them V32 But finally recognize Him when he breaks bread V31 Application: Jesus is revealed to us today in the Word and in communion with him. If your heart is burning but your eyes are blurry, keep walking with Him.
Conclusion: Jesus didn’t scold the disciples for not recognizing Him. He journeyed with them and when their eyes were opened, they ran to share the good news.
Challenge: This week don’t rush past your Emmaus Road moments. Jesus may be walking beside you, waiting to be recognized!
