Hunger And Thirst

We continue our study of the beatitudes by looking at Matthew 5:6, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." The term here does not suggest a mild hunger pain that we sometimes get when it gets close to meal time, but a very intense desire that we would have after doing without food or drink for a few days. I read one time where one liken this desire by the following illustration. If a person were to hold you under water; after about 60 seconds what would be your desire? Paying off your car? Getting another job? Painting your house? Getting rid of a few wrinkles? Or would it be the desire to get a breath of air? Yes, this would be our burning desire! Even so, we must have this burning desire and thirst for righteousness. Peter said it this way, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby," 1 Peter 2:2. One thing about a little baby, when they are hunger they will let you know, and no, is not the answer they want. We must want the truth, desiring it more than anything, and will not let anyone, anything get in the way. Human wisdom will not satisfy, the doctrines of men will not satisfy, the vain reasoning of false teachers will not satisfy; but only the righteousness of Jesus Christ found in the word of truth will satisfy this longing! Yes, those who seek shall find.
