The Sabbath

Some people have the false idea that the Sabbath Day of Exodus 20:8, which is the seventh day of week, was changed to the first day of the week. Some have called Sunday the "Christian sabbath", but where in all the word of God, does the scripture teach, such notions as these? Someone will ask why don't you keep the sabbath? Well, it is because it was a Jewish law, a sign between God and Israel. Notice from Exodus 31:15-17, "Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed." The New Testament teaches that the ten commandments were done away, (with of course all the Old Testament law), IICor.3:5-12, Col.2:14, Rm.7:1-4. We are under the law of Christ Jesus, and the apostles never taught or bound the sabbath upon Christians. Some would rest on the sabbath day, as a matter of conscience, Romans 14:5, but that was an individual choice. Christians meet on the first day of the week to worship, with 2 things done on that day only, giving and the Lord's supper, I Cor.16:1-2, Acts 20:7. The first day of the week has a great significance to Christians, for it is the day Jesus rose from the dead, John 20:1, Luke 24:1. The church began on the first day of the week, Ac.2. The gospel begin to be preached in it’s fullness on the first day of the week, Ac.2. I meet of the first day of the week with the saints, because of New Testament example and teachings. I do not keep the sabbath day, because I am not a Jew, nor has Jesus or the apostles commanded me to keep the sabbath day. In fact, Paul did say in Colossians 2:16-17, "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." I prefer to follow the body, the substance, and not the shadow of things.
