Buzzard Meat

In I Sam.17 we read about the story of David and Goliath. Now Goliath was a Philistine who was a giant. He was about 9 ½ feet tall, very strong, and a warrior since his youth. Now David was a young man, of fair complexion, and a shepherd. The Philistines has challenged the Israelites to send a man to fight one on one with Goliath. All were afraid of this imposing giant, of the Philistine army. But David when he heard about it, was ready to go to battle with this ungodly infidel, who had defied the Lord of hosts.

In the confrontation Goliath tells David, "And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field." vs.44. Which is to say, that he was going to kill him and leave his carcass as "Buzzard Meat" for buzzards to feed upon. (Buzzards are scavenger birds that sail around in the sky looking for dead animals to feed on.) But David responds to Goliath, "Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel." vs.45-46. God was going to help David fight this giant. Even though Goliath was a huge and imposing figure to do battle with, God was bigger, and David would prevail. In truth the carcass of Goliath would serve as buzzard meat for the scavenger birds to feed on. And as the story goes, David did prevail in the conflict with Goliath, and left his body for buzzard meat. May we seek to have the conviction, faith and courage that David manifested in this great story. The next time we see a buzzard feasting on a "road kill" carcass, lets think about the great faith and conviction of David, when he left the carcass of Goliath as buzzard meat.
