Barker

While traveling this year in the Philippines I had the chance to talk with a lot of various brethren on a lot of various topics. I had the chance to share about the work of the Lord in Ecuador, South America, and about the culture and situation in that country. I was kidding one day about getting a job at the bus terminal in Ecuador, if I run out people to preach to. They will have a man announcing at the bus terminal loudly "TENA, TENA, TENA, TENA." which is were that bus is going, or like for other cities that are announced, like "QUITO, QUITO, QUITO, QUITO." Benjie said that they have the same there in the Philippines and they call these people "Barkers." We were discussing one day the definition of the word preacher. The word is defined by Mr. Strong in his dictionary: "to herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth (the gospel):--preach (-er), proclaim, publish." The person who was a herald, would go and proclaim the king’s proclamation... HEAR YE, HEAR YE, and then would proceed to state what was the king’s message. This would do the same kind of thing as the "Barkers" does at the bus terminal. Speaking up and speaking forth to the people. Even so, those who preach are to speak forth the word of the King of kings. Paul said it this way, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" Rom.10:13-15. When we are speaking to an audience of people, speak out unashamedly, we are speaking the message of the King of kings, Rom.1:16. Also speak up were everybody can hear you. (The same would also be important in other parts of our service, those who teach the class, lead in prayer, make announcements, lead singing, serve at the head of the Lord’s table, speak loud enough that folks can hear you.) Let all who take part in the public service be a "Barker" for the Lord.
