Our Constitution

Pat Craig, one of the members here at Providence, gave me an article from the Richmond Register newspaper. It was an article about the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which "may convene to discuss gay ministers." One quote from the article says "The whole fabric that holds the Presbyterian church together is our constitution." Consider this ideal, that the thing that holds the Presbyterian church together it is this thing called a "constitution." This may be very well true concerning the Presbyterian church, yet the Lord’s church is held together by the new covenant of Jesus Christ, the word of God, the Bible. This beloved, is the fabric that truly holds the people of God together. Consider these verses, "If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord." 1 Cor.14:37. Paul and others wrote the commandments of the Lord, when they wrote the epistles or letters. They were not merely giving a bunch of human advice and human wisdom with what they wrote. They were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write these letters. "How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;" Eph.3:3-5, cf.2 Tim.3:16-17. This is why we are ever appealing to book, chapter, and verse for all that we do. Where would we be without the word of God? We would be a like a ship without a rudder, or a car without a steering wheel. We would have nothing to guide us, to give us direction. We would have nothing to give us a standard of authority. We would divide and splinter over opinion, human wisdom, feelings and the think so’s of men. But the word of God is our beacon of light to guide us along, and hold us all together following the our Lord and Savior. As this "constitution" is the fabric to hold the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) together, the Bible is the fabric to hold the church of Christ together! May we ever be students of that sacred and divine text.
