A Drive For Stuff

We were at a meeting the other night, and the fellow preaching was talking about how it seems so many of us have such "a drive for stuff" as we live in this world. It seems that we spend so much of our time and energy for the accumulation of stuff. Too often we are like the man Jesus described, in Luke 12:16-21, "And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." This man could have done many good and helpful things in his life to serve  his fellow man. But he had such "a drive for stuff" and he tragically assumes he had plenty of time to enjoy many good years with his stuff. But this is why God called him a fool, is that he was going to die that very night, and whose would get all his stuff? He certainly was not going to take it with him. "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content." I Tim.6:7-8. All the stuff that we can acquire in this world, can be useful if we are willing to do as Paul said, "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;" 1Tim.6:17-18. Thus by doing good things we can lay up treasures in heaven, "But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:" Matt.6:20. Don’t be consumed by all the stuff this world has to offer!
