Apostles' Doctrine

In the New Testament church we have five acts of worship that are spoken about in the gospel of Christ. In Acts 2:42&47 we read, "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers...Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." We have here the five acts of worship listed in two concise verses. These will serve as an outline for our studies over the next few studies as we discuss worshipping God in spirit and in truth.

We are to have the apostles' doctrine in our worship. The word of God is to be taught and preached among the saints. Consider in Acts 20:7, "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight." Paul told Timothy, "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine." 2 Tim.4:2. Further, ITim.4:6 "If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained." Thus in our worship we have the preaching of the word of God among the saints. Not the preaching of the doctrines of men, human wisdom, vain philosophies, nor the creeds of men, but the word of God. There is to be a respect in listening to the word of God with a desire to learn and to put in practice the teachings of God's word. In James 1:21-22, "Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
