Taketh Away The Heart

In Hosea 4:11 we read, "Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart." As one writer in his observation of the verse, said: "Wine and fleshly sin are pictured as blended in one, to deprive man of his affections and reason and understanding, and to leave him brutish and irrational. In all the relations of life toward God and man, reason and will are guided by the affections. And so, in God’s language, the "heart" stands for the "understanding" as well as the "affections," because it directs the understanding, and the understanding, bereft of true affections, and under the rule of passion, becomes senseless. Besides the perversion of the understanding, each of these sins blunts and dulls the fineness of the intellect; much more, both combined. The stupid sottishness of the confirmed voluptuary is a whole, of which each act of sensual sin worked its part." Well stated what booze and passions can do to a man or woman’s heart. Making foolish choices that is crazy. Common sense and sound reasoning goes out the door when we come it’s evil temptation and influence. We can throw away our reputation, our family, our health, our liberty in Christ, our jobs, can be in a moment of folly, be destroyed by such. The wise man said it this way, "Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour." Eccl.10:1. A one night stand can cost a person their home and family. Drinking and driving can land you a nice long stay behind bars, sitting in a 7 x 10 steel barred hotel, with no field trips even to Walmart. What took years in building a reputation can become a stench over night, because of lust and passions out of control. Let us seek to avoid such a path in life, it is a dead end street to take. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others.
