Worship in Spirit & in Truth

We began a discussion on the important topic of worship. We noticed that the Bible talks about 4 kinds of worship: will worship; ignorant worship; vain worship; and true worship. Today we want to talk more about being a true worshipper of God.

Notice the text in John 4:23-24, "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." It would appear to me that men and women who have the right attitude, would be desiring to be what God wants them to be, because Jesus said, "for the Father seeketh such to worship him." If I want to please God the Father, I "must worship him in spirit and in truth." Now notice that word "must" found in our text. This word must means need be, ought, should, be compelled, have to, a moral obligation. It is not something optional. That same word "must" is found in John 3:7, "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." If we are going to be forgiven, we must be born again.

Now notice the 2 things necessary to be a true worshipper, our worship must be in spirit andin truth. To be in spirit, is to worship with the right attitude, disposition, frame of mind, feeling. The Bible describes the kind of spirit or attitude we must have in the various acts of worship. Secondly, we must worship in truth; that is, according to the word of truth. "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." John 17:17. What we do in worship must be as the Bible teaches. We can do the right things in worship, but not have a right attitude, this is unacceptable. We can have the right attitudes in worship, but do the wrong things, this is unacceptable. No, both the right attitude, and the right things must be done to be a true worshipper. Next time we will begin looking at the 5 acts of worship.
