Blessed Are The Mourners

We continue our study of the beatitudes by looking at Matthew 5:4, "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." Jesus is teaching us about the need to have godly sorrow for our sin, that broken and contrite heart. In 2 Cor.7:9-11 we read, "Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter." Godly sorrow leads one to repentance, which is essential in God’s plan of salvation. The sorrow of the world leads to death. Let me illustrate, he one man is caught stealing, and he is crying and sad, that he got caught, a sorrow of the world. But then, he is another man who is stealing, and his conscience bothers him because he has sinned against God, and in his godly sorrow he decides he needs to repent, to change his ways, godly sorrow. Consider James 4:9-10, "Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." Yes, we must mourn and lament about our sins, for the broken and contrite heart will be moved to repentance, for we will turn to the Lord, where we will be comforted.
