Surgeons

I read an interesting book one time called The Making of a Surgeon by William Nolen, M.D. In his book he describes the 5 years of surgical training to become a surgeon. As he described his experiences with other doctors, there were various types of men he portrayed in the medical profession. One may be slothful haphazard in their work, seeking to do the least they can. Then you have the very talented, well-trained man, but who is an uncaring mercenary, a mere Ahireling. Dr. Nolen also described dedicated, caring men who may lack in skill but who in time would develop their talents. He felt the best doctors are those who have a rapport with their patients. As I read his thoughts about doctors, I began to think that preachers fall into these same sorts of categories.

Some preachers are slothful, haphazard in the work of the gospel. They seek to do the least they can get by with. Paul exhorts, ANot slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rom.12:11. This text applies just as much to the man who labors in the work of the gospel as it does to a factory worker, farmer or teacher.

Some preachers are loaded with talent and ability, but are uncaring and mercenary. Paul said, ASome indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: Phil.1:15-16. They would fit into the Ahireling mentality, Jn.10:12.

Finally, there is that category of preachers, who are dedicated and caring. AFor I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. Phil.2:20. Or as Paul put it, ABehold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. Now men who preach may vary in talent and abilities. Some who are younger can and should grow in their work and service. Faithful and able are the biblical requirements, 2 Tim.2:2. College education is not required, nor being married, nor having children are dictated by the Bible. What God needs, are faithful and able men to proclaim the word of God.
