Hittin' With a Hoe

I was talking with a Ed Buis one time, and he was related an interesting thing he saw when he was a teenager, about 60 years ago. There was a group of people that were meeting at a place that had the sign over the door, the Christian Church. It seems some of these folks were concerned about being scriptural in name, so they took down the sign and replaced it with a sign, with the name Church of Christ. Well, when the other folks found out about this, there was a big dispute to say the least. It seems some got so upset about the whole thing, that as Ed related, some went to "Hittin’ with a hoe." Let’s notice some scriptures on this.

First, in 1 Timothy 3:3, Paul giving the qualification of bishops said, "Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous." Also in Titus 1:7, "For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre." This term that we have highlighted, speaks directly to our topic at hand. No striker means: not a striker, not violent, not pugnacious, not a fist fighter, not given to blows, not ready to wound, not a smiter. Now it would certainly seem to me, that "Hittin’ with a hoe" would plainly be doing what these passages forbid. But, someone will say but these texts are talking about qualifications of elders. Yes, this is true. But are we not all to follow after these spiritual qualities, such as, to not be a striker? Yes verily, these qualities are things every Christian should strive for, a man who will serve as an elder has already developed these characteristics. Getting mad and start "Hittin’ with a hoe" is not Christ like, it will not promote the cause of Christ, it is sinful.
