Coal Bucket

In 1 Peter 3:7 we read, "Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered." I heard an interesting comment the other day relating to this passage of scripture. The statement that Peter made about, "giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker," the thought was suggested that Peter is trying to say that we need to treat our wives as a fine China vessel, not a "Coal Bucket." This is an excellent observation about the text here in I Peter 3:7. A fine China vessel would be treated delicately, with great care, with love and tenderness; knowing that it is valuable. Not as one would do with a "Coal Bucket" which would be treated with roughness, without much care; not worrying about scrapes, bumps or banging it around. No, an expensive vessel would be treated with great care and love; knowing that it is very valuable, priceless. Proverbs 31:10, "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." Do we not treat things that we invest a lot of time and money in, something very valuable, with great care and protection? Do we not spend a lot of time, energy, money in the care, maintenance and upkeep of, say as our automobiles or trucks? Should we not also spend a lot of time, energy, money, and efforts; in the protection, care and the keeping of our wives? Yes, she is very valuable, worth more than rubies, or a pile of steel we call an automobile, truck or tractor! Yet, look how some treat their vehicles, but then treat their wives as an old "Coal Bucket" or even less. It would seem to me that if we treated and cared for our spouse's as Peter teaches us to do, that women being the nature that they are, that they will respond in a favorable and good way. It will make it so much easier for women to be what they ought to be, when we treat them as a fine China vessel, rather than an old "Coal Bucket."
